Even without a flagship smartphone, it grew to 7.6%

United States and UK are now among the best markets for Microsoft's Windows Phone platform probably due to the fact that the competition is fierce at the top tier and mid-range.

However, it looks like at least one of the two countries has started to welcome Windows Phone among the most popular mobile operating systems.

WMPU reports research firm Canalys confirmed Windows Phone market share in the UK is on the rise, as the OS managed to capture no less than 7.6% of sales during the first quarter of 2015.

While this might not sound so impressive, it really is a huge achievement for a mobile platform that struggles to reach at least 5% worldwide market share.

According to Canalys, Windows Phone sales went up by 32% YoY in the UK during Q1 2015. This means that around 570,000 Windows Phone handsets were sold in the UK in the first quarter of the year.

Microsoft is slowing building market share without a flagship

Windows Phone was reported with 5.8% market share in the UK in the first quarter last year, which means the platform improved its presence in the country by 1.5%.

“Microsoft is slowly building share without a flagship or high-spec handset - they are after the volume end of the [professional] market. This strategy will probably change when Windows 10 comes out,” told ChannelRegister Tim Coulling, senior analyst at Canalys.

Canalys' reports also highlights the fact that Windows Phone was the fastest growing mobile operating system in the UK in Q1 2015. Microsoft's OS was up 32%, while Apple improved its performance by 7.8%.

“Microsoft is attacking B2B users with decent-quality, low-cost handsets, and people are refreshing BlackBerry with Microsoft. Microsoft is slowly building share without a flagship or high-spec handset – they are after the volume end of the [professional] market. This strategy will probably change when Windows 10 comes out,” added Coulling.
