Redstone builds currently limited to new Lumia phones

Microsoft has already started working on Windows 10 Mobile Redstone, and the company has delivered the first preview builds to new Lumia phones, namely the 950, 950 XL, 550, and more recently 650.

But while only handsets that shipped with Windows 10 Mobile in the first place can get it, everyone’s wondering when Microsoft actually plans to release these builds for Windows Phone devices also participating in the Windows Insider program.

Gabriel Aul, head of the Windows Insider program, has said in a tweet that Windows Phone models will only get access to Windows 10 Mobile Redstone builds once they get the upgrade to the operating system. Until then, if they’re still on Windows Phone or Windows 10 Mobile TH1, they won’t be allowed to upgrade to Redstone.

And while this does make sense because Microsoft is reportedly trying to prevent some upgrade issues that could actually break down devices, the company recommends everyone to wait and not to turn to hacks that could bring them Redstone builds earlier.

Right now, there’s a hack out there that could provide a Windows Phone device with access to the first Redstone build released by Microsoft, but the company warns that this is a very risky trick that could break down a handset forever.

As a result, it’s simply better to wait until the build becomes available for your device, Aul explains.

Windows 10 Mobile is expected to launch for Windows Phone devices by the end of the month, and Microsoft Mexico previously hinted that February 29 was the likely date when the rollout was scheduled to begin. We have no confirmation at this point as to whether the date is still valid or not, but the Windows 10 Mobile upgrade for Windows Phone devices had better land as soon as possible, especially because they are not allowed to upgrade to Redstone builds.
