Users can no longer sync data in their accounts

Microsoft is often accused of trying to kill its mobile platform, and judging from what happens regularly in the ecosystem, nobody can be blamed for thinking the company is indeed trying to step away from smartphones.

And as if this criticism weren’t enough, it appears that some users are now experiencing issues when trying to sync data on a number of Microsoft services on Windows Phone 8.1 devices, with OneDrive, OneNote, and Office said to be three of the apps that are hit by these errors.

Posts on Microsoft’s Community forums (via MSPU) indicate that syncing data from phones to Microsoft services returns an error that has no workaround at this point, with the message reading “We can’t upload your document to OneDrive right now. Please try again later.”

Only happening on Windows Phone 8.1

This is a problem that’s only experienced on Windows phones, and all apps are working correctly on non-Windows platforms like Android and iOS. Users posting on the forums explain that all features work properly, except for syncing.

“The same issue here on Nokia 920 8.1, also Nokia 520 on 8.1. Hard resets did nothing. Same as others say, files downloaded to the phone from OneDrive app will open from office>places>phone, but no sync,” one user explains.

Surprisingly, this appears to be happening only on Windows Phone 8.1 devices and everything is running correctly on Windows 10 Mobile, with Microsoft itself explaining in a statement that it’s looking into the issue and working on a fix already.

“We are investigating reports from Lumia users who have experienced the same issue. Rest assured that we will soon be ready to better serve you. We're just here if you have further questions,” Microsoft says.

The only thing we can do right now is to wait for a fix, though given Microsoft’s commitment to mobile, it’s hard to tell how long it’ll take for the company to provide a workaround.
