The modern version of Media Player is getting a bunch of new improvements on Windows 11, this time available exclusively for Windows insiders before the rollout to production devices kicks off at a later time.

In an announcement today, Microsoft reveals that the new version of Media Player is 11.2205, and it comes with several improvements for Windows insiders.

The most notable is the ability to sort songs and albums in the collection by date added, with Microsoft explaining that this was one of the top feature requests since the modern version of Media Player went live earlier this year.

“We are also beginning to roll out an update to Media Player in version 11.2205 and higher to Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel. In addition to performance improvements for users with large media collections, we’ve added a top requested feature based on your feedback! You can now sort songs and albums in your collection by date added,” Microsoft said today.

No ETA for the rollout to production devices

In addition, the software giant announced that Media Player is getting improvements for the CD playback support as part of this latest batch of updates. However, as compared to the previous improvement mentioned above, this one is available for all Windows insiders regardless of the channel they are currently enrolled in.

“Also, back in March, we began rolling out support for CD playback. We also made improvements to better adapt to theme changes and to the media content drag and drop experience. These updates are also now available to all Windows Insiders,” Microsoft said.

For the time being, however, there’s no ETA as to when the rollout of these Windows Media Player updates could go live for non-production devices. But given the release is not tied to an operating system update, the production launch should start when the testing is complete.
