New “End task” option coming to the taskbar

Microsoft seems to be working on a great new Windows 11 feature that will make ending processes a lot more convenient.

Right now, if you want to kill a task, the only way to do it is by launching Task Manager. In fact, there are multiple ways to do this, but Task Manager has long been serving as the most popular way to handle processes on a Windows device.

Now Microsoft wants to make ending tasks easier for Windows 11, with the company bringing a new option right to the taskbar context menu.

Twitter user @PhantomOfEarth has discovered that future Windows 11 builds will include an “End task” option when right-clicking the icons of apps displayed in the taskbar.

This means you’ll be able to kill a process by simply right-clicking its taskbar icon, so you’d no longer have to launch Task Manager for the whole thing.

As it turns out, the feature is already integrated into Windows 11 build 25300, but for the time being, it’s hidden. Users can enable it with Vivetool using ID 42592269.

Of course, it’s too early to tell when Microsoft could bring this feature to users, but as it typically happens in the Windows 11 world, we should expect it to make its way to the Insider builds at some point in the coming weeks. Given the new “End task” feature is already integrated into preview builds, it’s probably just a matter of time until this happens.

Microsoft is expected to release a new Moment update in February or March, but considering this feature hasn’t even been enabled for testers, it’s unlikely to be included in this update. Most likely, the launch will happen later this year, possibly as the big feature update for Windows 11 due in the fall.
