Someone has installed Windows 11 on old Apple hardware

Windows 11 is currently rolling out to devices out there, but as compared to Windows 10, it’s not available for all computers.

This is because Microsoft has updated the system requirements for Windows 11, so in order to be provided with the upgrade from Windows 10 to this new version, the device must meet a series of new requirements, including TPM 2.0.

The change has caused a massive controversy in the Windows community, with many accusing Microsoft it’s leaving behind millions of computers that would otherwise be able to run Windows 11 just fine.

A new video posted on YouTube by Bob Pony could easily reignite the whole controversy, as it shows Windows 11 running on super-old Apple hardware. More specifically, the latest Windows 11 Dev build available in the Windows Insider program has been deployed on a late 2006 Apple iMac.

And at first glance, everything is running surprisingly smoothly, though it goes without saying this configuration isn’t necessarily as snappy and responsive as a latest-generation PC.

Increased likelihood of bugs, Microsoft says

Microsoft itself defended its decision to block some devices from getting Windows 11 with figures proving that the older the hardware gets, the bigger the chances to encounter critical errors. “From Windows Insider machines, those that did not meet the minimum system requirements had 52% more kernel mode crashes (blue screens) than those that did meet the requirements. Machines that met the requirements provided a 99.8% crash-free experience that is effectively managed by OEMs and IHVs through modern driver update management. Additionally, on unsupported hardware app hangs are 17% more likely and for first-party apps we see 43% more crashes,” Microsoft said.

Installing Windows 11 on an old Mac isn’t by any means difficult, and the video comes with full instructions on how to do this on a Late 2006 device should you still have one around.
