The first Windows 11 update is live today

Microsoft’s first major Windows 11 update comes with several big improvements, including new options for the taskbar.

As you probably know already if you’re running Windows 11, the new operating system includes a refreshed taskbar as well.

The icons are now centered, and the Start menu, which has until now been aligned to the left of the screen, is now located in the center as well.

While this may be confusing for some, what was even more confusing was the lack of some taskbar features. And while Microsoft isn’t bringing all of them back just yet (though it’s currently working on doing it), the new Windows 11 update includes options to mute and unmute a call from the taskbar, as well as to share a window in a more straightforward manner.

More improvements already on their way

“In our hybrid world, the time spent connecting through video conferencing continues to rise. Phrases like “You’re on mute” or “Can you see my slides?” have become common things we say or hear throughout our day, and we want to help change that,” Microsoft says in today’s announcement.

“Mute/unmute and share any window from the Taskbar are designed to make it easier for you to take quick actions and have confidence that you are at your best while on video calls. Instantly accessible from your Taskbar, window sharing and mute controls are available to Microsoft Teams users with a work or school account.”

As said, the company is already working on even more taskbar improvements, and one of the old features that would soon make a comeback is support for track and drop on the taskbar. The feature has already been spotted in the existing Windows 11 preview builds, but for the time being, there’s no ETA as to when it’s supposed to go live for production devices as well.
