14 DAY TRIAL // Back in the days when Windows 10 was the latest and greatest Microsoft operating system, users were provided with a feature that just made sense.
They were allowed to create folders in the Start menu, therefore grouping select live tiles under the hood.
This feature mysteriously disappeared when Microsoft released Windows 11, and while the Start menu was supposed to be an evolution of its predecessor, it somehow proved less focused on the things that users really need.
The Redmond-based software giant is now working on dealing with the whole thing, so today, the company has announced support for app folders in the Start menu.
The feature is live in the most recent Windows 11 preview build, and while there’s no ETA as to when it could launch for everybody out there, there’s a chance it’ll be part of a future update the operating system will get in the coming months.
Familiar approach
App folders work exactly as you’d expect them to work, and if you’ve used this feature in Windows 10, then you’ll certainly find the approach rather familiar.
“We’ve heard from many of you that you’d like to customize your pins in Start by organizing them into folders, so we’re introducing the first version of folders in this build. Simply drag an app on top of another to create a folder. You can add more apps to a folder, rearrange apps within a folder, and remove apps from a folder. Keep an eye out for further improvements like the ability to name and rename folders in one of our upcoming builds,” Microsoft explained in the release notes of today’s build.
The feature is live only for the Dev channel, but Microsoft says it’s expecting feedback that should help it bring it to more insiders in the near future.
