New data provided by Valve for its Steam gaming platform shows that Windows 10 is increasing every month as it becomes the preferred gaming operating system for users across the world.

The 64-bit version of Windows 10 is currently the top choice for Steam users with a share of 57.03%, up 1.50% from the previous month. Windows 7 is the runner-up with 32.38%, which is down 1.19% as compared to June 2018.

In global market share, Windows 7 is the leading choice, while Windows 10 is trailing behind with slowly-improving adoption in the majority of markets.

The 32-bit version of Windows 10 is also growing on Steam, but it does its score doesn’t even compare with the one of its 64-bit sibling. Windows 10 32-bit runs on just 0.35% of Steam machines, up only 0.01% from the previous month.

Somewhat surprising is that Windows XP continues to be a top choice for Steam gamers, growing last month 0.01% to reach 0.23%. Windows XP support ended in April 2014, which means the platform is no longer getting updates and security patches.

Windows, just a small increase

Overall, giving the massive decline of Windows 7, Windows improved only 0.22% the last month, mostly thanks to the growth posted by Windows 10. Microsoft’s Windows is now running on 96.52% of all Steam computers at this point.

For comparison, Apple’s macOS, which isn’t exactly the top gaming platform but which benefits from increasing support from developers, is the runner-up choice with 2.93%, down 0.14%. The top performer was macOS 10.13.5 which reached a share of 0.47%.

Linux is the least-popular gaming platform on Steam with just 0.52% and a decline of 0.05%. Ubuntu 18.04 scored an increase of 0.03%.

This month, Windows 10 is expected to continue its growth, particularly thanks to the April 2018 Update becoming broadly available for all users, while Windows 7 is more likely to go down even more.
