Connect app no longer pre-installed in Windows 10

Windows 10 version 2004, or May 2020 Update, is still being rolled out to devices in stages, and more recently, Microsoft has revealed a chance that users of computers getting the update might notice.

The Connect app that powers the Miracast experience on Windows 10 is no longer available in Windows 10 version 2004, as Microsoft has decided to stop pre-loading the app with the operating system.

The good news is that the Connect app with Miracast support can be enabled separately, as it sticks around for a little longer as an optional app.

“The Connect app for wireless projection using Miracast is no longer installed by default, but is available as an optional feature. To install the app, click on Settings > Apps > Optional features > Add a feature and then install the Wireless Display app,” Microsoft explains.

The Windows 10 version 2004 rollout

Windows 10 version 2004 was announced in late May, and since then it’s been part of a gradual rollout to devices across the world.

This rollout is still happening these days, as Microsoft clearly takes its time to make sure that everything is running exactly as expected. So if you’re not seeing version 2004 on your device just yet, it’s because Microsoft needs more time to prepare it for your configuration to ensure the best possible experience.

There are ways to get around these restrictions, and for example, you can create bootable USB drivers to install version 2004 on a device, but Microsoft strongly recommends against it, especially if the update is blocked on your computer.

The likelihood of bugs in this case is very high, and installing the May update using a different method could eventually mean that you might have to struggle with a broken experience on your device.
