Microsoft releases new patch for printing issue

Microsoft has officially released a new update to resolve a printing bug in Windows 10 version 2004, officially called May 2020 Update.

Not a long time ago, the company confirmed that Windows 10 was impacted by a glitch breaking down printers, including not only the physical devices but also PDF printers.

The company has released patches for all the other versions of Windows 10 versions in the meantime, but version 2004, which is now being rolled out to users, was left without a fix.

Not offered on Windows Update

Today this fix lands as KB4567523, an update that also increases the OS build number to 19041.331 on devices where it’s installed. In other words, this is pretty much the easiest way to tell if the bug fix is installed on a device or not – just check the version number by typing winver in the Start menu.

“Addresses an issue that might prevent certain printers from printing. The print spooler might generate an error or close unexpectedly when attempting to print, and no output will come from the affected printer. You might also encounter issues with the apps you are attempting to print from, such as receiving an error, or the app might close unexpectedly. This issue might also affect software-based printers, such as when printing to PDF,” Microsoft says about today’s update.

What you need to know is that this update isn’t shipped automatically to all devices running Windows 10 version 2004, but only offered as a manual download from the Microsoft Update Catalog. In other words, it’s not available for all devices, but only for those who need it, so users experiencing this bug should head over to the link above to get the bug fix.

Most likely, all fixes that are part of this release will also be included in the next cumulative updates shipping as part of the July 2020 Patch Tuesday cycle.
