Users hitting this error can fix it in a matter of seconds

Updating to Windows 10 version 2004 technically comes down to checking for updates in Windows Update, as long as the new release is ready for your device.

As you probably know already, Microsoft is using a phased rollout for the new feature update, which means that not everybody gets it on day one, but actually in stages in order to make sure that no major bugs are encountered.

So while Windows 10 version 2004 is technically out, only some can get it as long as no upgrade blocks are put in place.

However, as some users have discovered, the upgrade to Windows 10 version 2004 isn’t always working as expected, as the process sometimes fails with various issues.

And right now, it looks like Windows Update error 0x80073712 is one of the problems that users could come across when installing Windows 10 May 2020 Update. But fortunately, fixing this isn’t necessarily the most difficult thing to do, and it all comes down to just a few simple steps.

First and foremost, the number one thing you should try is rebooting the device, as in some cases, the issue comes down to a network problem that can be resolved with a simple restart.

If the same error is encountered after restarting the machine, the next step is using the Deployment Servicing and Management (DISM) tool to scan the device and determine if any system files are damaged. If this is the case, DISM can take care of everything.

To launch a scan with DISM, simply launch a Command Prompt window with administrator rights – in other words, click the Start menu, type cmd.exe, right-click Command Prompt and then click Run as administrator.

Launching cmd.exe with administrator rights

In the Command Prompt window, type the following command:

dism /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

The process shouldn’t take too long, albeit this also depends on the size of the system drive and how many files it finds to be corrupted or missing.

When the process is completed, you should technically be able to check for updates and download and install the May 2020 Update correctly.

If you’re still unable to complete the update process, one thing you could try is turning to the Media Creation Tool for the whole thing. The MCT has already been updated to version 2004, so it can download and install Windows 10 May 2020 Update as well. Additionally, this app can create bootable media that can then be used to update a separate device to the new version.

Furthermore, you can also use the stand-alone Windows 10 May 2020 Update ISO images to avoid the Windows Update issues and install the new version manually. However, the ISO can also be used for a fresh install, which means you can start from scratch and also deal with any other problems that you might come across in the new operating system.

At this point, there’s no ETA as to when the automatic rollout of Windows 10 May 2020 Update is supposed to start, but Microsoft first needs to make sure that everything is running correctly for all users and only then advance to this next step. However, broad availability is projected to be announced in a few months, most likely later this summer, just ahead of the next feature update.

Windows 10 version 2009 is supposed to be finalized in September, with the rollout to users to kick off in November. The first preview builds for users enrolled in the Windows Insider program are likely to land as soon as this month with little changes.
