Twitter brings tabs in the Windows 10 app

Twitter has rolled out a surprising update for Windows 10 users, making tabs exclusively available to those running Microsoft’s latest operating system.

Long-time Microsoft users certainly know that, in most of the cases, iOS and Android are often considered the two priorities for app developers rolling out new features. This time, however, Windows 10 is the only operating system getting the tab support.

As you can see in the screenshot here, there’s a new + sign in the top bar that lets you quickly create a new tab and select which information you wish to display, including the timeline, search, notifications, messages, or search. This works similarly to third-party clients supporting tabs, but it’s a little surprising to see Twitter not rolling out this tool on iOS and Android as well.

Other changes

The official changelog posted in the Windows Store also reveals that the Twitter app now supports emoji with the Windows 10 library, while also displaying the number of replies on each tweet. Additionally, direct messages now display rich content instead of plain text links, and users can browse more content on Twitter without an account.

Last but not least, pinned tweets can be viewed and created, an option that was until now available on Twitter.com exclusively and isn’t even offered in the web-based Tweetdeck.

Twitter hasn’t revealed whether it wants to bring tabs on other platforms as well, but there’s a good chance this would happen, especially because the company is probably just experimenting with Windows 10 right now.

We’re hearing that not everyone sees the tabs feature just yet, and this is proof that it’s still in its early days, with Twitter probably still working on improving it with other options. Multi-account support would be a nice addition, mostly because tabs could make it possible for users to manage several accounts from the same window without having to switch between them.
