The official release of the app could take place soon

Microsoft is working on a OneDrive universal app for Windows 10, but it appears that the company is actually getting ready to release it, as a lucky user actually managed to install it from the store without even wanting to do so.

As spotted by WindowsClan, reddit user mcdenis sideloaded the old OneDrive app for Windows 8 because he liked it more, but Windows 10 then automatically updated it to the unreleased universal app.

The whole process took place in the store, which means that the Windows Store has somehow been tricked to serve the new OneDrive universal app to clients running the old version and checking for updates.

Public launch with the Anniversary Update

When attempting to replicate this behavior, everything worked exactly the same way and the OneDrive universal app was downloaded once again, he writes.

“I reinstalled the old OneDrive app in another VM and right after that, the store started offering the new unreleased app as an update. I guess it won’t be too long before it is released to insiders,” he writes. “I did not even purposely fool the store. I just wanted to use the old OneDrive app until the new one is released, but because of automatic updates, I ended up with the new one anyway.”

Indeed, the release of the app is expected to take place in the coming days, possibly this week, with insiders to get it first in order to try it in preview builds of the Windows 10 Anniversary Update.

The OneDrive universal app will launch on both PCs and mobile devices running Windows 10 and will be up for grabs from the store once the Anniversary Update hits the shelves. This should happen sometime in July, according to people with knowledge of the matter, but insiders should get it sometime very soon, possibly when the next build of Windows 10 becomes available later this week.
