Microsoft testing the feature internally on preview builds

Microsoft Edge browser will get a significant overhaul with the Anniversary Update in the summer and one of the new features, in addition to extensions, is support for swipe navigation gestures.

If you are a long-time Windows user, you might find it awkward that Windows 10 does not come with such functionality, especially because Windows 8.1 actually offered swipe navigation gesture support for touch-capable devices.

The company, however, has removed this feature in Windows 10, pretty much because Microsoft Edge is a completely new browser, so a number of options were left back when the team started working on this project.

But according to a report by WinBeta, Microsoft is already working to bring back swipe navigation gesture support in Edge browser and the Windows development team is testing this feature in internal builds of the operating system. Insiders should be getting access to this option in a future preview build before everyone receives it eventually when the Anniversary Update makes its public debut.

Navigation arrows and visual effects

Microsoft is indeed using the feature previously available in Windows 8.1 as the foundation of this new improvement, but the development team is also adding some additional tweaks, including navigation arrows and effects to make the whole process a little bit more eye candy.

It goes without saying that this feature is specifically aimed at devices with a touchscreen because it can easily improve the navigation experience on a tablet or laptop where Edge is used as the daily browser. But at the same time, this feature will also be available on mobile phones, the source reveals, as Microsoft wants to keep all its devices in sync and offer similar experience everywhere.

The Anniversary Update is scheduled to go live in the summer, most likely in July, and will be available on both PCs and smartphones. This new feature will make its debut in a preview build, but not sooner than the next week though, as Microsoft came across a major bug that delayed the release of a new version this week.
