The touch keyboard is playing a big role in Microsoft’s long-term Windows strategy, especially as the company is pushing for more form factors that include touch support.

With Microsoft itself betting big on 2-in-1 devices, the touch keyboard makes it possible for users to interact with their computers without the need for a physical keyboard. And that’s why Microsoft needs to make sure the touch keyboard is working exactly as anticipated, while also providing users with the customization options they need.

As it turns out, the company is already working on a series of new tweaking options for the keyboard, and they are available in the latest preview build of Windows 10.

As per Albacore, these customization options aren’t enabled for the time being, so you need to do the whole thing on your own. Once activated, the touch keyboard section in the Settings app is getting a handful of new options, including keyboard size, a background image, background opacity, and even key colors. Users can pick from a selection of key colors or just configure a custom color.

No word on the release date

While these new options are already available in the latest preview builds, though they’re not activated by default, Microsoft has remained completely tight-lipped as to when they could go live for users out there.

Microsoft has two feature updates in the queue for 2021, with the next one to go live as soon as April or May. However, this next release would be just a small pack of improvements, with the focus to be mostly on under the hood improvements and less on new features.

The fall update, on the other hand, will be more massive and will include several other new features, so time will tell when Microsoft wants to release these touch improvements for everybody.
