14 DAY TRIAL // Windows 10’s privacy saga is far from coming to an end, despite the fact that users don’t seem to worry about data collection these days as much as they did in the first days with the new OS on the market.
But Microsoft is well aware that telemetry options in Windows 10 still need to be addressed, so with the release of Threshold 2, the company is making changes that are specifically aimed at enterprise customers.
As promised approximately one month ago, Microsoft has introduced options that allow customers running Windows 10 Enterprise to disable data collection version, although the company clearly recommends everyone to stay away from such settings.
“In today’s update, we’re delivering on our promise to enable our enterprise customers to turn off all telemetry data if they choose. We strongly recommend against this, as this data helps us deliver a secure, reliable, and more delightful personalized experience. We’ll continue to work with third-party experts and incorporate your feedback on this important topic,” Terry Myerson, head of the operating systems group at Microsoft, said in a statement.
No options for consumers
Those who aren’t running the Enterprise version of Windows 10, which means the bigger part of adopters whose computers are powered by Home and Pro, aren’t allowed to disable telemetry settings, but only specific features.
There are apps that can do that for them by killing all services supposedly being used to phone home, but Microsoft says that nobody should turn to such solutions because they could have an impact on system performance and stability.
Microsoft, however, claims that only anonymous data is being submitted to its servers and all information is encrypted and stored in secure data centers, so nobody can access details collected from your computer. Of course, for privacy-obsessed consumers, such a promise isn’t enough, but hopefully, depending on the feedback the company received, options to disable telemetry in Windows 10 Home and Pro could be released at some point in the future too.
