This app “is essentially a scam,” some users post

Microsoft removed the Media Center edition when it rolled out Windows 10, but in order to provide users with capabilities to play content on their DVDs, the company decided to ship instead a Windows DVD Player app through the store.

Available free of charge for those upgrading from a Media Center SKU of Windows or for $15 (€12) for everyone else, the app only brought basic functionality that’s years behind what some other programs, such as VLC Media Player, currently offer at absolutely no cost.

So it’s no surprise that users who actually paid $15 for the app were extremely disappointed with it, and their frustration reflects in the ratings and reviews posted in the store.

Poor rating, negative reviews

At this point, the Windows 10 DVD Player app has an overall rating of 1.9, with nearly 350 users giving a rating of just one star.

Reviews aren’t good either, with many people accusing Microsoft of scamming them because they paid $15 for an application that does almost nothing.

“It is not worth $15, it would not be worth the storage space it requires even if it were free. Not to mention that it’s something that ought to be included in the default software,” one user complains in a review posted in the store on the official product listing.

“Once I hit fast forward, the only way to make it play at normal speed was to click one of the chapter controls. How do you design a DVD player that cannot stop fast forwarding or rewinding without doing that? […] Are you kidding me? It’s a paltry few issues, but I fiddled with it for all of two minutes before getting too frustrated to continued.”

Microsoft doesn’t seem to be very keen on improving its DVD Player app, so for the moment, it might be a good idea to look elsewhere if you want a Windows Media Center replacement.
