14 DAY TRIAL // The Redstone update coming this summer is very likely to bring significant improvements on desktops and mobile devices running Windows 10, and one new feature is likely to be similar to Apple’s Handoff.
A new report coming from WinBeta reveals that Microsoft is currently testing a feature that works in the same way as Handoff and allows you to start working on a device and pick up where you left off on another.
This comes in handy when having more than one device with Windows 10 (e.g. desktops, laptops, tablets, and phones), so you can, for example, start writing an email on your PC, leave before hitting the send button, and continue editing it from your phone while on the go.
If users aren’t aware of this feature, Cortana will be there to remind them of it, so they’ll always know that they can “pick up where they left off.” Microsoft is already testing such functionality behind closed doors and is likely to at least announce it at the BUILD developer conference this week.
Already available in OS X
This feature is already available in Mac OS X and allows similar app synchronization between Mac computers and iOS devices, be they iPad or iPhones.
“When your Mac computers and iOS devices are within Bluetooth range of each other (about 33 feet or 10 meters), they can automatically ‘hand off’ what you’re doing from one device to another. For example, you can start writing an email in Mail on your iPhone, then instantly pick up where you left off in Mail on your Mac,” Apple explains.
The Redstone update is scheduled to make its debut in the summer, with Microsoft to introduce several new features for both PCs and mobile, including support for extensions in Edge browser. More information will be provided at the BUILD developer conference later this week.
