14 DAY TRIAL // Microsoft has just rolled out a new Windows 10 Redstone 3 build for Windows insiders in the Fast ring, this time with support for both PCs and smartphones.
This is the first Redstone 3 build for Windows 10 Mobile devices, and just like expected, there are no major new features, as Microsoft’s goal right now is to improve OneCore and pave the way for more substantial improvements that could surface in the coming months.
Windows 10 build 16176 introduces serial device support in the Windows Subsystem for Linux, which means that Windows COM ports can now be accessed from a WSL process. This is the only new feature in this build, and it is exclusively available for PCs, so mobile devices aren’t getting anything new this time.
On the other hand, there are several changes, improvements, and fixes for both PC and mobile, and you can see the changelog in full at the end of the article.
Known issues
At the same time, there are several known issues, and for PC users, there’s one that everyone must have in mind when installing this build. Win32 apps ported to the Windows Store with Project Centennial won’t work in this build and will cause a green screen of death, the company says.
“Apps that use the Desktop Bridge (‘Centennial’) from the Store such as Slack and Evernote will cause your PC to bugcheck (GSOD) when launched with a ‘kmode exception not handled’ in ntfs.sys error,” Microsoft explains. The bug will most likely be fixed with the next build.
In the case of mobile users, there’s error 800b0109 showing up when trying to download this build, and Microsoft says that a reboot of the device is all it needs to be able to update as expected.
Keep in mind that this new build is exclusively available for the Fast ring, so there’s a chance that some other bugs are also there on both PCs and smartphones.
