Windows 10 has set a new personal record in terms of global market share, as its adoption increased last month to further improve the lead over its predecessors and non-Windows platforms.

NetMarketShare data shows that Windows 10 was the leading choice last month with a market share of no less than 57.83 percent, the highest since the operating system launched in July 2015.

The runner-up continues to be the already-retired Windows 7, whose market share dropped to 24.28 percent, while macOS 10.5 is currently the third choice with 4.39 percent.

Another notable achievement last month is the growth experienced by Ubuntu overall, as the Linux distro reached 2 percent market share, so it now has nearly double the market share of Windows XP.

Also, the decline of Windows 7 is something that should be highlighted as well, as more users seem to be making the switch to other operating systems – not necessarily Windows, though, as Linux also keeps growing and growing and growing.

Windows 7 no longer receives support since January this year, and users are now recommended to upgrade to an operating system that still gets updates and security patches.

Windows 10 reaching a new personal best happened just after of the debut of the May 2020 Update, a highly-anticipated OS feature update that brought lots of changes and features. Also known as version 2004, the May 2020 Update comes with massive improvements, including Windows Subsystem for Linux 2, or WSL2, which allows users to run Linux on top of Windows 10.

The debut of this new version, with a full Linux kernel now available, could slow down the migration to Linux, albeit this is something that remains to be seen in the long term. For now, the adoption of Windows 10 is on the rise, and this can only be good news for Microsoft.
