Windows 10 is now running on 900 million devices, according to new data shared by Microsoft itself, and the OS adoption in the last 12 months was higher than ever before.

These are the words of Yusuf Mehdi, Corporate Vice President at Microsoft who teases some big announcements coming next week at the company’s hardware event on October 2.

During this show, Microsoft is expected to take the wraps off new Surface models, including a brand-new foldable form factor with two screens and running a special version of Windows 10. The dual-screen Surface, however, is likely to go on sale next year.

“#Windows10 is on more than 900M devices! Thanks to our customers, we added more new Windows 10 devices in the last 12 months than ever before. From PCs to HoloLens to Xbox to Surface Hub, Windows continues to power innovation—with more to come next week!” Mehdi said in his tweet earlier today.

The Windows 7 demise

While Microsoft hasn’t said it clearly, it’s pretty obvious that the approaching end of support of Windows 7 is one of the factors that contributed to the faster growth of Windows 10.

Windows 7 is scheduled to reach the end of life on January 14, 2020, which means that no new security updates would be released after this date. Windows 7, however, continues to be the world’s second most-used desktop operating system, with third-party statistics indicating that at least 3 in 10 PCs out there still running it.

The closer we get to the January 2020 deadline, the more devices will be upgraded to Windows 10, helping the new OS eventually reach the $1 billion milestone. When this happens, expect Microsoft to announce it with much fanfare, especially given its increased focus on everything Windows 10.
