Windows 10 can be used to power a variety of things, from PCs to IoT devices, and now Toshiba tries to take advantage of this versatility by using the operating system for its own pair of Augment Reality (AR) glasses.

The dynaEdge AR100 Head Mounted Display (HMD) and the dynaEdge DE-100 Mobile Mini PC is a device combo that powers the dynaEdge AR Smart Glasses which Toshiba will bring to the market later this year and which should provide a completely new way to remain productive on the go.

Basically, the head-mounted display, which tips the scale at just 56 grams, offers enterprise features like live video calls, barcode scanning, messaging, video capture, document viewing support, and streaming. It’s all possible thanks to an integrated micro display featuring a touchpad, GPS, an accelerometer and gyroscope, a 5-megapixel camera that comes in handy for streaming and video calls, a speaker and dual noise-canceling microphones.

Light portable PC

The portable PC is the one that does the whole work, and although you’re supposed to carry it around all the time, that shouldn’t be such a huge problem given that it weighs only 311 grams. On the other hand, it comes with dedicated controls for its features, but also with support for external displays, should you want to use it as a traditional PC when connected to a monitor or a different screen.

It goes without saying that the glasses aren’t aimed at home users, but at the enterprise market where continuous productivity is a priority.

“We developed the dynaEdge AR Smart Glasses to help businesses mobilize their frontline and field workers and improve business outcomes with powerful PC solutions that can go anywhere they go without being obstructive. For the first time, a Windows-based PC can be worn to provide augmented reality for the job site, and operated using voice and touch HMD technologies, keeping hands free for hands-on work,” Carl Pinto, vice president, marketing and engineering, Client Solutions Division, Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc., said.

The glasses will go on sale in the second quarter of this year and pricing will begin at… $1899.
