A few carriers across the world have already started the Windows 10 Mobile rollout, so a number of lucky Windows Phone device owners have already gotten the new operating system, but officially, it’s yet to begin.

Vodafone Australia, for example, has recently completed the testing of Windows 10 Mobile on its devices and is now waiting for Microsoft to give the go-ahead in order to ship the new bits to Windows Phone handsets.

As WMPU writes, the support page reveals that Lumia 640, 640 XL, 735 and 930 will be included in the first wave of upgrades, and Vodafone says that “testing is complete, awaiting confirmation of rollout schedule.” This means that Microsoft might have the final word here, and if everything goes right, the release should begin very soon.

Still no announcement from Microsoft

Windows 10 Mobile build 10586.63 is believed to be the upgrade version released to users, and this particular build has already been shipped to fast ring insiders for testing purposes.

People close to the matter explain that, when Microsoft finally starts the rollout of the new operating system, this build will be released not only for slow ring users but also for Windows Phone device owners, so the same bits will arrive on all handsets running its platform.

The Windows 10 Mobile release will take place in stages, so only a few devices will get it in the first wave, but it’s not yet clear if Vodafone’s aforementioned list is 100 percent accurate when it comes to the models to receive the upgrade at first. If it is, then popular Windows Phone devices such as the high-end Lumia 1520 and the affordable flagship Lumia 830 might have to wait for the second wave.

At this point, there is no information as to when this second wave of rollouts could begin, but previous reports claimed it could land in February.
