Microsoft has confirmed in an email sent to partners that Windows 10 Mobile was delayed, but in the meantime, the company is still working on the insider previews to let the community help refine performance before the big launch.

And now a report from NPU claims that the company is internally testing Windows 10 Mobile build 10586.71, which could be released to users as a cumulative update sometime next week.

Most likely, there will be no new features and options, as the company is hard at work to fix bugs and improve the performance of the operating system on all Windows Phone devices.

At this point, Windows 10 Mobile is only available on Lumia 950 and 950 XL, but with the rumored February launch, the operating system will launch on Windows Phone devices too, so the company needs to test the performance and reliability on all handsets in its lineup.

Rollout to take place in stages

The Windows 10 Mobile rollout is now expected to start in February, but Microsoft is still tight-lipped on the handsets that will get it at first. Rumor has it that the company plans to push out the operating system in stages, which means that only a handful of devices will get it in the first wave.

Carriers that have until now tested Windows 10 Mobile on their devices claim that Lumia 640, 640 XL, 830 and 930 might be included in this initial release, but this information is yet to be confirmed by Microsoft. On the other hand, with Microsoft still delaying the release of Windows 10 Mobile, users that will have to wait longer because of this phased rollout will be even more disappointed, so certainly, Redmond needs to find a way to bring the update to all devices as soon as possible.

In the meantime, the easiest way to try out Windows 10 Mobile is to register for the Insider program, as this is also the fastest method of getting the RTM build when it becomes available.
