Microsoft’s latest mobile OS posts just 1 percent increase

New data provided by AdDuplex reveals that Windows 10 Mobile is still struggling in terms of adoption, as Windows Phone 8.1 continues to lead the charts when it comes to devices running Microsoft’s smartphone operating system.

Windows 10 Mobile is powering only 17 percent of devices, which represents an increase of just 1 percent over the previous month.

One of the reasons behind Windows 10 Mobile’s super-small growth is its limited availability, as Microsoft released the new operating system only for some 50 percent of devices running Windows Phone.

At the same time, AdDuplex wonders whether “this just means that Windows Phone 8.1 users left for other operating systems,” and this is very likely given the criticism lately.

On the other hand, Windows Phone 8.1 keeps leading the charts with 76.3 percent, and this shows not only that not everyone is willing to upgrade to Windows 10 Mobile but also that Microsoft left an important share of its users behind when it decided to release the new operating system for just a share of its users.

Anniversary Update leading the pack

In terms of Windows 10 Mobile versions, the Anniversary Update (1607) is number one with 85.4 percent, while version 1511 is still powering 6.1 percent of these phones. Windows 10 Mobile Creators Update builds are already installed on 8.5 percent of the handsets.

Lumia 550 continues to be the most popular Windows phone on the market right now with 13.2 percent, while Lumia 650 has climbed to the second position with 12.3 percent. Lumia 640 is third with 12 percent, while flagship devices like the Lumia 950 and 950 XL are far behind with 8.1 and 4.9 percent, respectively.

Windows 10 Mobile will also get a major update in a couple of months called Creators Update, just like the PC sibling, but there are rumors that the Redstone 3 update due in the fall could be the last one for Microsoft phones. There is also speculation that Microsoft could kill off the Lumia brand, but a confirmation in this regard is yet to be provided.
