Microsoft has just made one huge step towards the release of the Windows 10 May 2020 Update, also known as version 2004, to production devices: it shipped the final build to the last batch of testers.

In other words, the RTM build is now ready and is being tested by the latest Insider channel, and if everything goes well, the public rollout should kick off in just a few weeks.

More specifically, Microsoft pushed build 19041.207 to Windows insiders in the Release Preview ring – this particular testing ring is only used for the most stable builds, and updates here are typically released just before a new Windows 10 feature update is projected to go live.

Launch rather sooner than later

Microsoft itself has confirmed that it’s now giving the last-minute touches to the May 2020 Update.

“We are now getting the Windows 10 May 2020 Update (20H1) ready for release and releasing Build 19041.207 to Windows Insiders in the Release Preview ring. We believe that Build 19041.207 is the final build and we will continue to improve the overall experience of the May 2020 Update on customers’ PCs as part of our normal servicing cadence,” Brandon LeBlanc, Senior Program Manager, Windows Insider Program, says.

Windows 10 version 2004 should thus go live for the first wave of production devices in a few weeks.

Microsoft will use a rollout model in stages, which means that not everyone will get the new feature update at the same time. This approach allows the company to get feedback on potential issues in the operating system and suspend the rollout before the new Windows 10 version is offered to more devices using the affected software or hardware configuration.

If everything goes well, the rollout of new Windows 10 feature updates typically completes in just a few months after the first production devices get it.
