Latest Microsoft News update includes live tile goodies

The most recent version of Microsoft News comes with a series of welcome improvements, including refinements for the live tiles that show up in the Start menu.

Worth emphasizing is that Microsoft News already came with a live tile, but this update that brings the app to version 4.45.22053.0 comes with support for pinning a topic that you’re interested in.

“This update includes support for multiple Live Tiles for the News app. You can now pin any topic of interest as a Live Tile and get news updates right on your Start menu,” the changelog reads.

What this means is that the live tile no longer concerns the Microsoft News app as a whole, but it also supports news topics. For example, if you’re interested in Apple news, you can just pin this topic to the Start menu, and the live tile will then take care of displaying new articles without the need for you to open the app.

Live tiles not going anywhere

Today’s update is good news not only for those who use Microsoft News but also for live tiles fans.

Reports that made the headline in the last few months indicated that Microsoft wanted to kill off the live tiles completely, instead switching to a more static version of the Start menu more or less inspired by the design currently used in Windows 10X.

While this is something that makes sense, Microsoft itself has suggested on several occasions that live tiles aren’t going anywhere, and today’s update confirms that these are here to stay. Microsoft News is a rather new app for Microsoft, and given that it now supports live tiles, it’s pretty clear that the software giant isn’t thinking of removing them in the coming years.

The new Microsoft News update is available in the Microsoft Store.
