Nearly 6 in 10 PCs out there now running Windows 10

Windows 10 keeps increasing its market share, so last month, for example, it managed to a set a new personal record with nearly 6 out of 10 computers out there running this operating system.

The figures provided by NetMarketShare for the month of January show that Windows 10 increased its market share from 53.36% in December to no less than 57.08% in January. Windows 7, on the other hand, dropped from 29.57% to 25.56%.

The Windows 10 increase and the Windows 7 decrease are obviously the result of the latter reaching the end of support.

Windows 7 no longer receives updates as of January 14, so a significant number of users either migrated or are in the process of doing it to Windows 10. So it makes sense for Windows 10 to go up and Windows 7 to go down, as users switch from the latter to the first.

Free upgrades still possible

Microsoft is also pushing hard for users to upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10, and what’s more, the company still allows free upgrades unofficially. In other words, if you’re still running Windows 7 and want to move to Windows 10, you can do the whole thing free of charge with an in-place upgrade, obviously as long as your copy of Windows 7 is legitimate and activated.

The difference between Windows 10 and the rest of the operating systems in terms of market share is huge. While Windows 7 is the runner-up in these charts, third in the list is Windows 8.1, which currently powers 3.38% of the devices out there. macOS 10.14 is next with 3.20%, followed by version 10.15 with 4.12%. Windows XP keeps making the top with 1.49%.

Certainly, the market share of Windows 10 will increase in the coming months, especially as more users complete the migration from Windows 7 to Windows 10.
