Windows 10 has grown at a much faster pace in North America than it did at a global level, and right now it’s not only the number one desktop operating system in the region, but it’s also very close to reaching half of the desktops there.

Data provided by StatCounter for the month of September indicate that Windows 10 is currently the leading desktop Windows operating system with no less than 49.31 percent, followed by Windows 7 with 36.31 percent.

What’s important to note is that these figures concern only the Windows PC base, but it’s still impressive to see Windows 10 powering nearly 50 percent of all the desktops in use in such a large market.

Furthermore, overtaking Windows 7 is an important achievement for both Microsoft and Windows 10, especially because recently it’s been proved that not everyone is very keen on upgrading, setting the stage for another Windows XP moment when Windows 7 reaches end of support in January 2020.

Windows 8.1, third desktop Windows version

According to StatCounter figures, Windows 8.1 is the third Windows desktop choice right now with 8.44 percent, while Windows 8 is the next version in the charts with 2.56 percent.

The other good news for Microsoft is that Windows XP collapsed in a more substantial manner in the last 30 days, so it’s currently at 2.19 percent, while Windows Vista, which no longer receives support since earlier this year, dropped to 1.11 percent. Windows XP support came to an end in April 2014, but for some reason, a significant number of users keep running it, despite the obvious security risks.

On the other hand, it’s worth mentioning that these figures are slightly different from what other data analytics companies provide, but in most of the cases, Windows 7 and Windows 10 are leading the charts with a big difference versus the other OS versions.
