Delaying Windows 10 April 2018 Update could, in the end, prove to be a good thing for Microsoft, as the longer it takes for the company to ship a new version, the more PCs are updated to the current release.

Statistics provided by AdDuplex for April 2018 show that Windows 10 Fall Creators Update (version 1709) is now running on no less than 92.1% of the Windows 10 PCs on the market, and adoption keeps improving every month.

The second most-used version of Windows 10 right now is Creators Update (1703), which is running on 3.2% of the PCs, followed by the Anniversary Update (1607) with 2.9%. It’s worth noting, however, that the Anniversary Update is no longer receiving support from Microsoft, and this could be the main reason not only for its decline, but also for the Fall Creators Update getting more users.

Redstone 4 just around the corner

Only 0.7% of the Windows 10 PCs are still running the November Update and just 0.4% are stuck on the original RTM build shipped in July 2015. On the other hand, 0.8% of the systems are currently enrolled in the Windows Insider program and running preview builds of Redstone 4 and Redstone 5.

When it comes to Surface devices, AdDuplex says the Surface Pro 4 continues to be the top model with 34%, while the Surface Pro 3 is the runner-up with 20%. The 2017 Surface Pro improved quite fast to reach 12.7%.

The original Surface Book has a share of 6.5%, while the more expensive Surface Studio all-in-one PC is far behind with just 0.3%.

Microsoft is now giving the final touches to the Windows 10 April 2018 Update, and if the latest rumors are accurate, the go-ahead button should be pressed in the first days of May. Initially, the kickoff was projected to begin on April 10, but Microsoft delayed the launch due to a BSOD in the RTM build.
