New cumulative updates published on Patch Tuesday

It’s Patch Tuesday, so Microsoft rolled out new cumulative updates for Windows 10, this time with the focus on security fixes.

The new cumulative updates are KB4016871 (1703), KB4019472 (1607), KB4019473 (1511), KB4019474 (RTM) for each Windows version.

Since they land on Patch Tuesday, it’s twice more important to install them, not only because they bring Windows 10 systems fully up to date but also because they include security fixes that address known vulnerabilities in the operating system and in Microsoft’s software.

Cumulative updates require a PC reboot once installed, so make sure you save all the work before starting deployment.

End of servicing for original Windows 10

One very important thing that users should have in mind today is that this month’s Patch Tuesday cycle marks the end of the original Windows 10 version that Microsoft shipped in July 2015.

As a result, Windows 10 RTM (version 1507) is getting its last updates today, so from now on, no bugs or security vulnerabilities would be addressed by Microsoft. Users are strongly recommended to update to a newer version of Windows, and it goes without saying that the Creators Update is the preferred choice because it brings the biggest number of improvements and the longest support at this point.

The Creators Update was released last month for users worldwide, but the rollout continues as we speak with Microsoft shipping it in stages. This means that not everyone is getting it via Windows Update, and for users who are upgrading from the original Windows 10 version, this might be a problem.

On the other hand, updating through the Update Assistant is the best solution to quickly get the Creators Update, though in some cases this might involve dealing with some compatibility issues and other problems.

These cumulative updates appear to install correctly at this point, but we’ll keep an eye on reports and let you know if anything goes wrong.
