The April 2020 Patch Tuesday updates are now live

Microsoft has just released new Windows 10 cumulative updates as part of the April 2020 Patch Tuesday, and as usual, the focus is on security improvements.

However, these cumulative updates also include additional non-security bug fixes, and users are recommended to install them as soon as possible.

On the other hand, there are Windows 10 users who prefer to wait a little bit more and avoid installing the new updates right away, mostly because of the risk of issues they could come across. Cumulative updates have previously caused various issues on Windows 10 devices, including broken OS features, and this is why waiting for additional feedback might be the right option for some.

The following cumulative updates are available right now for Windows 10 devices:

Now let’s have a look at the improvements that are included for the latest three stable versions of Windows 10 (and which the majority of devices already run). Additional information about the rest of the Windows 10 versions (including those which are no longer supported for home users), is available on the KB pages linked above.

Windows 10 version 1903 and 1909

As everybody knows already, these two versions share the same cumulative updates, as they’re nearly identical, with Windows 10 version 1909 only featuring small improvements under the hood.

The new cumulative update KB4549951 increases the OS build number to 18362.778 for Windows 10 version 1903 and to 18363.778 for Windows 10 version 1909.

In addition to the typical security improvements shipped on Patch Tuesday, this cumulative updates comes with resolved vulnerabilities for Microsoft Office products. So if you’re using the Office productivity suite, this cumulative update should block any potential exploits, which means that it’s highly recommended to install this update as soon as possible.

Additionally, this update also includes fixes for storing and managing files, but also further changes to improve security when Windows performs basic operations.

Microsoft says it’s not aware of any issues with this cumulative update, which means everything should install and run just fine after the patch is deployed.

Windows 10 version 1809

In the case of Windows 10 version 1809, or October 2018 Update, the update that goes live today is KB4549949, which increases the OS build number to 17763.1158.

Pretty much the same changes are available in this update as well, including the said Microsoft Office improvements, updates for storing and managing files, and improved security when Windows performs basic operations.

This time, the update comes with a known issue, but this one is actually inherited from a previous cumulative update. In this case, an error is encountered after installing the cumulative update on devices with some Asian language packs.

Microsoft says that the way to go on this is to remove the any recently added language packs, install the cumulative update and the reinstall the language pack. If this doesn’t work, you can reset your PC. However, Microsoft says that it’s also working on a resolution and a fix should be shipped in the coming months.

At the time of writing, we aren’t aware of any issues experienced with this month’s cumulative updates. However, I’ll continue to monitor reports on these updates and let you know should anyone come across installation issues or post-installation problems.

As usual, if you also come across such problems, make sure you let us know in the box after the jump.
