Gaming audio quality said to be impacted by the issue

Microsoft says it’s not aware of any issues that its most recent Windows 10 version 1903 cumulative update might come with, but on the other hand, more and more users complain of various problems after installing it.

In addition to the KB4515384 issues that I already told you about yesterday, I’m now seeing more people claiming that the very same cumulative update breaks down audio or reduces the quality when playing games.

A discussion thread on reddit, for example, has several users confirming that the audio quality is affected by the installation of this cumulative update, and removing it seems to restore the expected behavior.

“I am experiencing the same issues. Both in PUBG and also APEX. Sounds in front of the player model sound normal, but everything coming from the sides or from behind, basically everything not in a roughly 90° wide area in front of you sounds muffled and quiet. Maybe 10% of normal volume. So far I have not found any solution except uninstalling the update,” reddit user Reklenamuri said in a more thorough description of the bug.

Bug not yet acknowledged

While many proceed to uninstalling the cumulative update altogether to restore the original audio quality, it looks like changing the Windows sound settings to 16 bit, 44100 Hz (CD-quality) could also do the magic on some devices, albeit at this point I can’t tell for sure that this works for everyone.

Microsoft hasn’t acknowledged any problems with cumulative update KB4515384, which means that the company hasn’t said a single word about the audio bugs that people are complaining about here.

It remains to be seen when and if Microsoft confirms the glitches, but for the time being, if the audio is substantially lowered or completely broken down when playing games, you should know you’re not alone and cumulative update KB4515384 might be the culprit.
