Microsoft rolled out Windows 10 cumulative update KB4471324 for version 1803 (April 2018 Update), and one of the issues that it fixes concerns the Start menu.

Ironically, however, the same cumulative update introduces another Start menu issue that has already been confirmed by Microsoft.

First and foremost, this cumulative update resolves a bug that Microsoft first acknowledged in the KB4467682 which was published on November 27. As the company explained, after installing cumulative update KB4467682, custom Start menu layouts may be displayed incorrectly.

The issue was addressed in Windows 10 version 1803 cumulative update KB4471324, which is available right now from Windows Update and from the Microsoft Update Catalog. This update increases the OS build number to 17134.471, and you can check the version by typing winver in the Start menu.

New Start menu issue

However, this new cumulative update for Windows 10 version 1803 introduces another glitch that’s also affecting the Start menu, and Microsoft has confirmed it in the known issues section of the update.

“After installing this update, some users cannot pin a web link on the Start menu or the taskbar,” Microsoft says.

The company goes on to explain that it is already working on a fix, but specifics on the ETA aren’t available for the moment. However, a future cumulative update should resolve it, Microsoft says, though there’s a chance this would only land in January 2019 as part of the next Patch Tuesday cycle.

At this point, the only way to resolve this new Start menu bug is to uninstall the update completely, which obviously leaves your system with the previous issue also hitting the Start menu.

Also, keep in mind that cumulative update KB4471324 also comes with plenty of security improvements, including for Internet Explorer and Microsoft Edge, so removing it means you are no longer protected against exploits aimed at them.
