No surprise: yet another cumulative update causing issues

If you’re surprised after reading the title, you really shouldn’t be. Windows 10 cumulative updates have failed to install for quite some time now, and it appears that KB4093112 is hitting similar issues as well.

KB4093112 is the April 2018 cumulative update for Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, and while Microsoft says it’s aware of just one minor issue that causes Windows Update History to incorrectly report the update failed to install, several users claim there’s more to troubleshoot.

At this point, there’s just a limited number of reports pointing to issues with cumulative update KB4093112, but this is pretty much how everything begins every month. We’ll continue to monitor these posts and update the article should more problems be reported.

First and foremost, there are users claiming that KB4093112 fails to install just like the previous botched updates, with one such complaint posted on Microsoft’s Community forums:

“KB4093112 installs, reboot, few seconds to load, notice hard drives are missing from explorer, check disk management, minus 1 drive of the 6 in the system, reboot again takes like 5 min to load to the login screen,” the user explains.

Breaking down the Start menu

Others reveal that the KB4093112 fails with error 0x800f081f, though in this case very little has been said about what exactly happens during the install. Previously, cumulative updates failing with a similar error forced the system into a reboot loop before offering the update once again and prompting for a restart to complete the install.

On reddit, one user says cumulative update KB4093112 installed correctly, but caused other issues, like the Start menu no longer working. This has been a problem with cumulative updates for quite some time, but Microsoft previously addressed the bug in 2017.

“KB4093112 update broke everything on the task bar (Win button doesn't open the start menu either),” the user explains.

We’ll continue to search for more information on failed installs experienced by this cumulative update and report back should workarounds or more details be offered.

UPDATE, April 12: It looks like more users hit the same issues with this cumulative update, though the error codes are slightly different. Read more about the failed installs here.
