Windows Mixed Reality might not be available on Cloud SKU

Microsoft is working on launching Windows 10 Cloud at some point in the future, possibly with the Creators Update in April, as a successor to Windows RT and with a restriction making it impossible to install Win32 programs.

But it looks like Windows 10 Cloud could lack another important feature, as the Mixed Reality Portal seems to be missing from the operating system in the most recent build.

Windows Mixed Reality, which many people know as Windows Holographic, is one of Microsoft’s most ambitious Windows 10 features, as it allows headsets to be connected to PCs in order to work with universal apps available in the store in a virtual ecosystem.

Launched with much fanfare in late 2016, Windows Holographic was more recently renamed to Windows Mixed Reality, but according to a new report, it might be a feature exclusively available on the “full” versions of Windows 10, most likely Pro and Enterprise.

Locked feature in Windows 10 Cloud

It turns out that the recently-released Windows 10 build 15048 does come with a Mixed Reality Portal app on the Pro version, but on the other hand, this app, which is supposed to be the central hub of Windows Mixed Reality on the operating system, is missing on the Cloud SKU.

Given the fact that it’s a Windows Store app, however, there’s a chance that Microsoft could offer it separately, so although it’s missing from the OS, this doesn’t necessarily mean that all capabilities have been removed.

In fact, it’s believed that it’ll be possible for Windows 10 Cloud users to upgrade to the Pro version and unlock Win32 applications, so Mixed Reality features are most likely there as well, only that they’re not available in default configuration.

We’ll find out more about how Microsoft sees Windows 10 Cloud in the coming weeks, especially because we’re approaching the release date of the Creators Update, with the RTM build likely to be compiled and shipped to insiders as soon as this month.
