The confusion was created by a mistranslation, the firm adds

The next Windows 10 update will be called Fall Creators Update when it launches later this year in the spring in the southern hemisphere

The Windows 10 Fall Creators Update will launch, as anyone can guess by simply reading its name, in the fall, but there’s a problem: the fall is actually autumn in the United Kingdom and other countries in Europe and, what’s worse, it’s spring in the southern hemisphere.

So nobody was surprised earlier this week when news emerged on a second name for the Windows 10 update, which was said to launch in these “special” markets as the “Autumn Creators Update.”

But it turns out that it was all just a mistake, with Microsoft explaining in a statement that the confusion was created by a mistranslation. From English to English, that is, as the translation that Microsoft is referring to was made from American English to British English.

So there you go, the next OS update will be called “Windows 10 Fall Creators Update” all over the world, simply because it makes sense, but there’s another problem with that: the Fall Creators Update lands in September, when in some countries it’s actually spring.

Windows 10 version 1709

This means that this time it’s not a mistranslation, but a bad naming choice, and this shows that Microsoft should actually go for names that are not in any way related to localization and which could lead to such confusion.

For what it’s worth, Microsoft most often refers to Windows 10 releases using version numbers, with the upcoming Fall Creators Update labeled as version 1709. The version number is a direct reference to the release date, with the two first digits representing the year and the other two the month of the launch, hence 1709 stands for September 2017.

It remains to be seen what name Microsoft gives to the Windows 10 Redstone 4, which is projected to launch in early 2018. We can already bet it won’t be called Spring Update.
