New privacy settings coming to WhatsApp soon

WhatsApp is working on all kinds of improvements for the messaging app these days, and according to a new report, one of the new features that the company wants to add allows users to hide their status only for some specific contacts.

Right now, if you don’t want others to see your status and profile picture, WhatsApp does offer a dedicated feature in this regard, only that it applies to absolutely all contacts in your phone.

In other words, you can’t configure WhatsApp to show the status to some and hide it from others because the app only includes a global setting that applies to everybody.

At this point, this is pretty much the only privacy option regarding the status and profile picture, but according to a report from WABetaInfo, the company is now working on dealing with the whole thing by adding more options to hide your status.

Feature currently in the beta program

Starting with a future update, users would be allowed to only enable the aforementioned privacy settings for select contacts, therefore letting others see the status and the profile picture. This is certainly good news for those who use the same account for personal stuff and work.

So thanks to this new update, WhatsApp will provide four different options when it comes to the “Last Seen” privacy setting: everyone, my contacts, my contacts except (which lets you configure the exceptions), and nobody.

Worth knowing, however, is that this feature is currently in beta testing stage, so it could still take a while until you will be able to configure the contacts not being able to see your status.

No ETA is obviously available, but depending on how the testing goes, we expect this feature to go live on iPhone and Android in the coming months.
