New feature coming to the official WhatsApp mobile app

We’ve known for a while this feature was in the works, but it now looks like we’re very close to the moment WhatsApp is getting ready to release it.

The mobile messaging app will soon get a new capability that will allow users to move chats between iPhone and Android, therefore making it easier to migrate from one platform to the other.

In theory, switching between iPhones or Android devices is already possible without losing the WhatsApp conversation history because all messages are stored in the cloud. On Android devices, WhatsApp can back up the chats in Google Drive, while on iPhone, the same functionality is powered by iCloud.

But on the other hand, if you want to transfer your chats from iPhone to Android or the other way around, this isn’t possible directly using WhatsApp, though there are other third-party applications out there that allow you to do this.

New feature debuting on Samsung devices

Samsung’s Unpacked event today witnessed the introduction of several new Galaxy phones, but at the same time, it also brought important news on the WhatsApp front.

Samsung’s Galaxy phones will be the first to support the migration of chats between platforms, with the South Korean company confirming you will be able to transfer chats from older devices.

In a message on Twitter, WhatsApp has also confirmed that users will soon be able to transfer their history across platforms, with the debut of the new feature scheduled to happen soon.

“Want to securely take your WhatsApp history from one platform to another? We’re working to make this possible starting with @SamsungMobile devices, and it’s coming to @Android and iOS phones soon,” WhatsApp’s Will Cathcart explained.

No ETA has been offered as to when the new feature could become available.
