Google and WhatsApp have teamed up to offer users of the instant messenger a new feature that will allow them to back up their chat history whenever they want.

Thanks to the new integration with the Google Drive service, WhatsApp users can now upload their chat history for later reading.

Users will be able to upload a story, a video or a photo that has been received on WhatsApp. Google further states that you will be able to create a private backup of your chat history, voice messages, photos, and videos directly in Google Drive.

Once you make a backup, you will be able to restore everything that's been uploaded to Google Drive with just a few taps.

“Whether it’s recounting a story, watching a video, or enjoying photos with family and friends, our memories help us reconnect with what’s really important. And every month, nearly a billion people use WhatsApp to do just that,” says Google in a blog post.

The new feature is rolling out in stages

Keep in mind though that the new backup feature might not be available right away for all WhatsApp users, but Google confirmed that it has already started the global rollout which should end in the next few months.

This is the first time that WhatsApp benefits from a backup service that allows users to upload their chat history into the cloud. The standard service of the application only provided users with local backup, thus its usefulness was rather limited.

But beginning this week, if you're lucky enough, you will be able to upload your WhatsApp chat history to Google Drive.

If you don't have the application yet, you can now download WhatsApp Messenger for Android for free via Google Play Store. It should be fully compatible with all devices powered by Android 2.3 and up.
