WhatsApp keeps working around the clock on improving the messaging app pretty much on all fronts, and this week, the company has released beta builds of its desktop clients specifically to allow users to try out new features in advance.

As most users know already, the Facebook-owned company has released desktop clients that essentially allow users to continue their conversations with contacts by simply syncing phones with computers.

The desktop client is more or less based on the browser-based WhatsApp Web, but given WhatsApp is working on multi-device support for its platform, the company has now started focusing on more functionality for its apps aimed at Windows and macOS.

At this point, the latest beta builds of WhatsApp desktop for macOS and Windows allow users to record voice messages and listen to them before sending them to contacts. As per WABetaInfo, WhatsApp desktop also allows users to pause the message and listen to it, with the company reportedly planning to bring similar functionality to mobile devices too.

Multi-device support coming

In the current stable versions of WhatsApp for iPhone and Android, recording a voice message requires users to press a dedicated button in the conversation screen, all without any option to listen to what they’ve recorded or pause the recording.

Once the desktop clients of WhatsApp reach the maturity, they should be part of the company’s multi-device strategy, which means that users would be allowed to add more than just a single device per each account. In other words, you’ll be able to use the same WhatsApp account for chatting with your contacts not only on your phone, but also on the desktop, tablets, and possibly other devices.

At this point, however, no ETA is available as to when the multi-device support could see the daylight, though we do know the company is already internally testing the early versions.
