New feature has recently been spotted in beta

WhatsApp already allows multiple devices to connect to the same account, and without a doubt, this is a great improvement given the service has long been limited to just one device.

However, the biggest shortcoming of this important update is that the Facebook-owned company does not allow users to configure two separate phones for the same account.

In other words, while you can add multiple devices to the same account, you are not allowed to use two different phones, but other devices like PCs and tablets.

But according to a recent discovery from WABetaInfo, this could change sooner rather than later, as the company is working on allowing two phones to sync the same chat history.

In other words, two phones can access the same account, which in theory means that the multi-device support could soon include two phones as well.

Currently in the beta stage

At this point, however, the feature is still in the beta development stage on Android, so given it’s in the early days, it’s pretty difficult to tell when precisely it could finally get to go-ahead for production devices.

But for users who own more than one smartphone, this is without a doubt a massive update. Moving from iPhone to Android and the other way around has long been a nightmare for those who wanted to migrate their WhatsApp history, so with this new update, they could have the same conversations on both devices.

Certainly, this also brings WhatsApp closer to competition, as alternative services like Telegram already allow users to configure more than one mobile phone to connect to the same account.

For now, the only thing we know is that the feature is in development, but on the other hand, there’s no guarantee it could even end up being released given the testing is underway.
