The app could come with a limit for Google Drive backups

Backing up the WhatsApp data on Android and iPhone is extremely convenient, as the messaging app comes with built-in support for Google Drive and iCloud, respectively.

In other words, you don’t have much to do, other than go to the configuration screen in WhatsApp and create a backup stored in the cloud.

Until now, the backups you were allowed to create on Android came without a size limit, which means that no matter how many files you had in there, everything could just be stored in the cloud at no extra fee.

This obviously came in very handy to most users out there, especially when trying to back up many gigabytes of files. But this is all about to change.

Google Drive backup size limits

As discovered by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is working on something that many users won’t like: the company wants to introduce size limits for the backups created in the cloud on Google Drive.

In other words, WhatsApp may no longer allow backups that are larger than a specific size, though for now, it’s not yet known what that specific size is going to be.

On the other hand, this new feature isn’t necessarily a surprise. We’ve known for a while that WhatsApp was working on options to enhance the experience with backups, as the company wants to give users more control over what data they stored in the cloud.

In other words, users will son be allowed to exclude certain files from the backups, be they images, videos, or documents. In theory, this will also help deal with this new size limit that’s going to be implemented, as users can make sure they have enough storage in the cloud for their backups.

For now, however, there’s no ETA as to when the new settings are supposed to launch in WhatsApp.
