WhatsApp Could Be Getting “Like” Button and “Mark as Unread” Feature Soon

WhatsApp is one of the most popular messaging applications out there, and a big part of its allure is the fact that it is available on different mobile platforms including Android, iOS or Windows Phone.

WhatsApp is always testing new features and today we get word of a bunch of novelties that might be coming to the application soon enough. As Android Pit reports in the near future, we might see WhatsApp include a new “Like” button and a new ability that can mark messages as unread.

Facebook has already implemented some specific features into WhatsApp like the “read message” thick which is characteristic of their Messenger app. So it does make sense that Facebook will extend the “Like” button all the way to WhatsApp too.

We’re not exactly sure how the feature will be implemented. It’s possible that when users send media files like videos or photos, the recipient will be given the option to “Like” it.

WhatsApp beta testers say new feats are coming

The other rumor concerning the new features coming to WhatsApp has to do with marking messages as being “unread.” Being able to mark messages as unread is not something new for email platforms, but given that in WhatsApp the communication is achieved in real-time, the “unread” feature might take on another dimension.

At the moment, WhatsApp allows the sender to see when the recipient has seen their messages by virtue of a blue thick mark showing underneath their text. But if the recipient decides to go back and mark the message as unread, will WhatsApp allow this change in status to be visible to the sender also? Imagine texting your crush only to see that he or she has decided to mark your message as unread, so as not to have to reply right away. That would be pretty gruesome.

For the time being, these features are under testing, so it might be a while before we get to see them actually be implemented in the application. The roll-out might start with Android and then move on to iOS and other platforms, like it’s usually the case when it comes with new functionalities.
