The adoption of software allowing voice and video calls has skyrocketed lately for pretty obvious reasons, and WhatsApp obviously wants to be part of this trend too.

And while voice and video call support was already available in the mobile versions of WhatsApp, the Facebook-owned company is now working on bringing the same capabilities to the desktop.

In other words, WhatsApp wants users to be able to call their contacts using nothing but their computers, and this will be possible with WhatsApp Web or the official desktop clients.

As reported by WABetaInfo, this feature is currently being tested with a limited number of users, and by the looks of things, the company uses a gradual rollout across the world.

Rolling out in the coming weeks to everybody

Both the phone and the video call buttons in WhatsApp Web and desktop come with a beta label, so WhatsApp wants to be very clear from the beginning the feature might still not work exactly as expected

Voice and video calls will open in their own windows, and the new buttons should show up in the top bar next to the search icon.

At this point, WhatsApp has remained completely tight-lipped on all specifics on this new update, but more information is likely to be shared in the coming weeks as the work on this feature advances. The aforementioned source speculates the support for voice and video calls on the desktop would go live for all users in the coming weeks, and of course, there’s nothing you can do to get the update earlier, as it all depends on a simple server-side switch.

In the meantime, voice and video calls on WhatsApp on mobile devices work just like before, so if you want to easily connect with your contacts, it’s all at one-tap distance in the messaging app.
