A new bug has now been confirmed in the update

The rollout of Windows 11 2022 Update, also known as version 22H2, is currently underway, with Microsoft sticking with its phased process because of obvious reasons.

Such an approach gives Microsoft enough time to take action whenever it discovers a new glitch in the update. If this happens, the company can automatically block the update for the potentially impacted devices, therefore limiting the damage that a glitch could eventually cause.

This is precisely what’s happening right now.

As it turns out, some of the apps and games running on Windows 11 2022 Update end up experiencing various performance issues, such as stuttering and other unexpected slowdowns. Needless to say, this isn’t necessarily the experience you’d normally expect from the latest and greatest version of Windows 11, so it’s pretty clear something that should be happening is, well, happening.

The Redmond-based software giant has recently confirmed the glitch, explaining that both apps and games are affected by this problem.

Worth knowing, however, is that not everybody is affected, and what’s more, not all apps and games are hitting the same bugs. In other words, you could very well run Windows 11 2022 Update without encountering any performance problems.

According to Microsoft, the whole thing is happening because some of these apps and games try to (and eventually manage) to enable GPU performance debugging. This obviously shouldn’t happen, especially in the case of home users, so eventually, the debugging process ends up using additional resources and therefore cause slowdowns that degrade the overall performance.

“Some games and apps might experience lower than expected performance or stuttering on Windows 11, version 22H2. Affected games and apps are inadvertently enabling GPU performance debugging features not meant to be used by consumers, Microsoft explains.

In theory, the easiest way to resolve the problem is to just install the most recent version of the apps and games that are causing these performance glitches. On the other hand, there’s no guarantee that such an update would resolve the slowdowns, as the developers themselves must first include a fix in the latest versions. In this case, you should just reach out to the developer of the app or game that’s causing the performance problems to make sure such a patch is currently in the works.

“If you’re using the Microsoft Store, once a new update is rolled out, it should install automatically on your Windows 11 device, with no input required on the user side.

If you are already on Windows 11, version 22H2 and are experiencing this issue, you might be able to resolve it by updating your games and gaming related apps to the latest version available. If you are unsure how to update the games and apps you have installed, you will need to consult the developer of those games and apps but most will update automatically through the store they were purchased from or directly when opening them,” Microsoft says.

While the developers themselves are the ones that should come up with a fix, Microsoft itself is also working on a full patch. However, this is only expected to go live in the upcoming cumulative updates, so it’s hard to tell right now just when it is projected to land on the impacted devices.

In the meantime, the devices where the apps and games that could potentially cause performance issues have been blocked from installing the Windows 11 2022 Update. Microsoft strongly recommends against installing the update using other ways of installing the 2022 Update, such as the Media Creation Tool, as the whole thing could lead to serious performance problems affecting the stability of the device.
