Three big updates projected to launch next year

Microsoft is working non-stop on further polishing the experience with Windows 11, and needless to say, the whole thing has been working like a charm so far.

The 2022 Update that started rolling out earlier this year has brought massive new features to users out there, with the Moment 2 update coming with further goodies, including tab support in File Explorer.

With 2023 just around the corner, it makes sense for users to wonder what’s next for Windows 11, especially as the software giant is believed to also be planning the release of a completely new operating system called Windows 12.

The good news is that the current strategy used by Microsoft for Windows 11 isn’t going to change, so 2023 is expected to come with big news as well.

This is because the company is reportedly planning not one, not two, but three different major updates for Windows 11 next year.

The first of them is the Moment 2 update, which is essentially a pack of improvements that would be released to users at some point in February in March. Just like Moment 1, this new release will be entirely focused on new capabilities, and if you’ve been part of the Windows Insider program, you’re probably familiar already with the new goodies.

For example, it should bring a search feature in Task Manager, the overhaul of the widgets UI, which is now running in full screen, as well as further polishing for the search bar and the tablet-optimized mode for the taskbar.

But this isn’t all.

Microsoft is also working on a Moment 3 update that should go live only a few months later, likely in May or June. The focus will once again be on new features, and we should expect them to start showing up in Insider builds in the first months of 2023.

And last but not least, Microsoft is planning a third Moment update that would go live in September or October as Moment 4. This time, the update is likely to be known as Windows 11 version 23H2, so it’s expected to be quite a massive release.

In the meantime, Microsoft is still working around the clock on bringing the 2022 Update to users out there. Version 22H2 is mandatory for the Moment updates, so Microsoft must first complete the rollout before shipping new improvements to users.

Based on this schedule, we should expect the rollout of the 2022 Update to be over by February or March when Microsoft is projected to ship the Moment 2 update.

The most recent rollout status update published by Microsoft went live in October.

“We are entering a new phase of the rollout for Windows 11, version 22H2 and we are increasing its availability to all who check for updates on eligible Windows devices. Note that, if we detect that your device might have an issue, such as an application incompatibility, we might put a safeguard hold in place and not offer the update until that issue is resolved. Information regarding safeguard holds is available below on this page,” Microsoft said at that point.

“Users who are interested in experiencing the latest feature update can choose to do so by opening Windows Update Settings and selecting Check for updates. If your device is ready, you will see the option to Download and install.”

Needless to say, the Redmond-based software giant hasn’t said a single thing about its Windows 11 plans in the short term, and while we do know that at least one major update is coming, there’s no doubt that 2023 is going to be a busy year for Windows 11 users.
