Yet another cumulative update gets the green light

Microsoft has shipped a new cumulative update for Windows 10 Fall Creators Update (version 1709), currently the second most-used version its operating system.

The update that Fall Creators Update systems are getting today is KB4457136, and the first notable change is the OS build increased to 16299.699.

Before anything else, it’s worth noting that this update has been re-released due to what Microsoft calls “a missing solution.” A number of systems thus got to install the update bumping the OS build to 16299.697, so if you’re not running .699 make sure you download the most recent patch.

As for what’s new in this new cumulative update, the changelog is huge and it includes a little something for everyone.

There are also fixes that were part of the previous cumulative updates, such as the ones aimed at installation issues for encrypted appx packages, but also new improvements to help evaluate “the compatibility status of the Windows ecosystem to help ensure application and device compatibility for all updates to Windows,” as Microsoft explains.

Sign-out process refinements

One very important change concerns laptops where the sign-out process wasn’t completed as expected. The software giant says the following:

“Addresses an issue on some laptops that prevents sign-out from completing. The issue occurs when a customer signs out and immediately closes the laptop. As a result, when the laptop is reopened, the device must be restarted.”

You can check out the changelog below if you want to see all the release notes in this new cumulative update.

Also worth noting is that KB4457136 comes without any known issues, so all systems are supposed to be able to install it correctly. In the past, cumulative updates have caused particular issues on a number of PCs, but it looks like this is no longer the case with the latest releases on Windows 10 version 1709 and 1803.
