Microsoft has just released a new cumulative update for Windows 10 version 2004, but worth knowing is that this is an optional release that’s offered as a preview of the next Patch Tuesday cycle.

Windows 10 cumulative update KB4568831 can thus be installed on Windows 10 May 2020 Update and Windows Server 2004. On Windows 10, it increases the OS build to 19041.423.

First of all, let’s review a series of very important details.

Windows 10 version 2004 is now being rolled out in stages to users across the world. The first wave of devices received it in late May, and Microsoft is making it available for more computers gradually. This is an approach that the company uses to find bugs in the early days before they make more victims, thus ensuring better reliability and stability for everyone.

The new cumulative update can be downloaded via Windows Update from the Optional updates section and the Microsoft Update Catalog page using this link. It is not pushed to devices automatically, which means it shouldn’t show up on Windows Update without you manually requesting it.

The changelog is huge, and you can check it out in full in the box after the jump. But there still are a few highlights that are worth talking about, and this is what we’re going to do in the next few lines.

Cumulative update KB4568831 resolves a bug that’s hitting a number of devices upgraded to Windows 10 version 2004 and which blocks them from connecting to the Internet using a cellular modem. Needless to say, if an Internet connection is not available on these computers, the only way to go is to manually download this update on a separate device and then transfer the file to the affected PC. If a secondary Internet connection exists on the affected device, installing KB4568831 is obviously the more straightforward approach.

Additionally, today’s new cumulative comes to resolve a problem that broke down the Settings app. Previously, some users complaining that Settings just crashes all of a sudden, obviously making it impossible to change any configuration option on their devices.

There are also improvements for network printing, as some applications were previously unable to access this feature, as well as family safety refinements on ARM64 devices.

Windows 10 cumulative update KB4568831 also introduces a patch for a WNS issue that was previously experienced when forced tunneling was enabled. Microsoft provides more details on the whole thing:

“Addresses an issue in the Windows Push Notification (WNS) service that prevents you from selecting a virtual private network (VPN) interface to make outbound connections. As a result, you lose connectivity with the WNS service when forced tunneling is used.”

Just one known issue.

Those who use UWP apps on a regular basis are also provided with some goodies in this new cumulative update. As some discovered the hard way, these apps sometimes crash all of a sudden, and Microsoft says it’s all caused when the installer calls the Restart Manager to restart File Explorer. The good news is that this behavior has now been fixed, so everything is back to normal.

There’s just one known issue in this update, and it’s the same one that’s been around for several cumulative updates already. It’s the IME bug that Microsoft says you can fix by heading over to this support article.

Other than that, it’s pretty clear this is a massive bug-fix release. However, it goes without saying that users shouldn’t install it on production devices, as the update is only supposed to be used for testing ahead of the official release of a new cumulative update next Patch Tuesday.

According to Microsoft’s own schedule, the upcoming Patch Tuesday takes place on August 11.
